CHICAGO (CBS) — A teenager’s alleged threats of violence at Barrington High School have prompted police to step up security at the school on Wednesday.

Former Barrington student Tyler Bosworth, 18, allegedly posted a message on Snapchat on Sept. 6, threatening to use guns and knives to kill people at the school on Wednesday, according to police.

Bosworth was arrested on a felony disorderly conduct charge on Sept. 8, and was being held at the Lake County Jail on $100,000 bond, pending a bond review hearing on Thursday.

At a school board meeting Tuesday night, Barrington Unit 220 School District 220 Supt. Brian Harris said police would provide additional security for Barrington High School on Wednesday.

“If, for any reason, we ever felt that there was an unsafe situation, or an environment that is not appropriate, we would intervene significantly; and quite frankly wouldn’t encourage any kid to be there if we felt like there was an unsafe situation,” he said.

District officials have posted messages on social media, assuring students and parents the school is safe, and sent versions of those messages by voice mail, and over the school’s PA system.

“It was an isolated situation, and we have full confidence that the school is safe, secure, and appropriate for kids to be in attendance,” Harris said at Tuesday’s school board meeting.
